Repurposing Tactical Training Data to Enable Adaptive Training at Scale for Navy Pilots

‘TOPMAST’ adaptively recommends training material for individuals, crews, squadrons, and wings given current training requirements

Aptima, Inc., a trailblazer in leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to enhance mission readiness, announced today that it has completed a $1.5 Million Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award to develop TOPMAST for Training Operational Performance via Measure Automation and Scenario-generation Technology.

As the complexity of threats and emerging warfare capabilities increase, so do the number of Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) and the corresponding training regimes. Instructors are increasingly in need of automated tools to enable training that scales with complexity.

In Phase I, Aptima and partners at ASEC Incorporated and the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) developed the TOPMAST training scenario library management tool to assists instructors with specifying training objectives (TOs) and manage a constantly increasing corpus of training scenarios. The system was designed to continually recommend the most valuable TOs for instructors’ trainees, thereby ensuring that training is more effective and efficient.

During Phase II, the Aptima team extended the Phase I TOPMAST prototype to (1) reuse tactical training data to generate scenario libraries at scale; and (2) improve integrated performance assessments and adaptively recommend training material for individuals, crews, squadrons, and wings given current training requirements.

TOPMAST can benefit Navy training on many levels: individuals, crews, squadrons, wings, and above.

  • For individuals and crews: TOPMAST assesses training results, recommends new training, and inserts targeted training events into scenarios in real-time.
  • For squadrons: TOPMAST analyzes trends in both operations and training, and automates authoring procedures to populate a scenario library.
  • At all levels: TOPMAST maintains and annotates a training scenario library with understandable insight on which Training Objectives are addressed by each scenario, and how the library covers each.

Aptima welcomes the adoption or merging of your technology with one or more of our SBIR Topics. We are eligible for SBIR Enhancement funding, as well as TACFI and STRATFI awards, all of which are sole source.
